The lithium-ion battery was developed by a team of researchers led by John B. Goodenough, M. Stanley Whittingham, and Akira Yoshino.
In the 1970s, Whittingham, a professor at Binghamton University, began working on developing a rechargeable battery using lithium. He discovered that using lithium ions instead of metallic lithium allowed for a safer and more stable battery.
In the 1980s, Goodenough, a professor at the University of Texas at Austin, discovered that using cobalt oxide as the cathode material in the battery significantly improved its energy density. This made it more practical for use in consumer electronics.
In the 1990s, Yoshino, a researcher at Asahi Kasei Corporation in Japan, developed the first commercially viable lithium-ion battery by using a carbon-based material as the anode, which made the battery lighter and more stable.
For their contributions to the development of the lithium-ion battery, Goodenough, Whittingham, and Yoshino were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2019.
